Don't call Zomato customer care number; you might lose your money

With the advent of technology, a lot of things have gone online. Be it booking tickets, buying clothes, food items or groceries, we don't really prefer the offline mode. In a short span of time, the online food ordering business has taken off in India.

Today, most people buy food online using food apps instead of going to restaurants. Online food ordering is very convenient as you get the food items of your choice delivered right at your doorstep. Companies like Swiggy and Zomato have a large customer base and they are acquiring more and more customers each day.

As the number of people transacting online rises each day, frauds too are on the rise. If you are not careful while carrying out online transactions, fraudsters can wipe out all the money from your bank account. Recently, a woman from Bengaluru lost Rs 17,286 just by contacting the fake customer care of Zomato.

When you face issues with orders it is normal to contact the customer care of the company. But, fraudsters have set up fake customer care numbers with the intention of cheating innocent people.

How a woman lost Rs 17,286 to fake customer care number?

A woman from Bengaluru had ordered food on Zomato and she had to cancel the order; because of some reasons. After she canceled the order, she wanted to get the refund, so she tried to find the customer care number of Zomato.

She went through the official website of the company, but she could not find the customer care number. She then searched for the customer care number on Google and a number popped up.

Thinking this to be the genuine customer care number, she called up. The person who answered the call introduced himself as a customer care executive of Zomato and promised her a refund.

She was then asked to download a mobile app to get the refund. After she downloaded the app; she lost Rs 17,286 instead of getting the refund. She was made to download the remote access app and offer certain permissions. After providing the necessary permission, fraudsters gained complete control over her mobile phone including personal data. Fraudsters even gained access to the OTP sent to the victim's mobile number through this app.

Zomato has registered a complaint with the Cyber Crime department with regard to this fake customer care number in its name. In the complaint, they have mentioned that they don't have customer care helpline numbers.

Zomato depends on chats and emails to communicate with customers and they don't have a calling option. In case you find any Zomato customer care number coming up on Google, it’s a fake one.

How to avoid this kind of fraud?

1. Make sure never to download any suspicious apps on your phone and be careful when giving permission.

2. Do not provide personal information to anyone overcall.

3. If you want to contact the customer support of any company, make sure to collect the customer support number by visiting the official website of the company.
