FSSAI advises food operators to stay aware of fake websites

If you are planning to start any business which involves manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, and sale of food products, the first thing you must do is obtain FSSAI Registration or the License. So what is FSSAI? FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is an organization which is set up to monitor and govern the food business in India and aims at reducing the food adulteration and sale of sub-standard products in the country.

Every food business in India must follow the rules and regulations laid down by FSSAI. The 14-digit registration or license number issued by FSSAI must be printed on all the food packages.

Now, with the intention of cheating innocent people of their hard-earned money, fraudsters have set up fake websites to provide fraudulent registration and licensing services. In the recent investigation carried by FSSAI, they have identified 10 agencies running under the name of the FSSAI which offers services of registration and licensing.  Some of these websites even use the logo of the FSSAI. But, these are unauthorized websites and they have no right to issue registration and licensing to food operators.

Following this, FSSAI has asked the food business operators (FBOs) to be aware of fake websites running under its name. FSSAI has also said that it is not liable for the losses suffered by the food business operators for the deficiency of services by such fake websites. Food business operators must apply for the license or registration only through the genuine FSSAI portal.

FSSAI Chief Executive Officer Pawan Agarwal said, "FSSAI appeals to public to exercise care and caution while applying for FSSAI licence and registration as food business operator. Only FSSAI's licensing portal should be used for registration/ license application,"

He also said that, if applicants need any help, they can approach the regional offices of FSSAI or food safety officer or the jurisdictional designated officer for the required guidance. The details of the same will be on www.fssai.gov.in.

So, if you are a food business operator who is planning to avail the services of any such online websites for registration or license; you must do some background checks for identifying the authenticity or reliability of the services provided by the website.

FSSAI has also launched a Food Safety Mitra Scheme, under which digital mitras are trained to assist the food business operators with regards to online filings of licensing and registration at very low charges. Details regarding the same are available on the website  https://fssai.gov.in/mitra.
