A lot of Indians prefer travelling by train as its cheap and efficient mode of transport. Even though many people prefer travelling by train, there are certain Indian Railways rules which commuters have never heard of. These rules are set up by the Indian Railways for the comfort of passengers. If you travel on a train, it is very important to be aware of these rules.
We will discuss certain Indian Railways rules which many people are not aware of:
1. Two stops rule
If you miss boarding the train from the designated boarding station, the TTE (travel ticket examiner) is not allowed to allocate your berth to any other passenger until the next two stops or for the next one hour (whichever is earlier). As per rules, you are allowed to catch the train from the next station, if possible. After the train passes the next two stations or one hour has been completed since the train left your designated boarding station, the TTE is allowed to allocate your berth to the next passenger.
If you are unable to undertake a train journey, you can file a TDR and if it’s sanctioned, you get a 50% refund on the base fare.
2. Sleeping hours for middle berth passengers
According to Indian Railways rules, the sleeping hours for the middle berth occupant are between 10 PM to 6 AM. Once the sleeping hours are over, the middle berth occupants must keep their berth down, so that the passengers in the lower berth can sit comfortably.
3. Extending the journey
Due to unavailability of tickets during the peak season, many commuters will have to book tickets at an earlier station than the intended stop. In such cases, you can contact the TTE and extend the journey before reaching the destination station. For extending the journey, TTE will issue a ticket by collecting an extra fare. For an extended journey, the passenger will be given a different berth or a seat in the chair car.
4. Refunds on Tatkal tickets
A few years back, no refund was provided on the Tatkal tickets. But, now you can claim a refund on Tatkal tickets as well. If there is any change in the train route or if the train is delayed by more than 3 hours or if the train misses your station, you can claim a refund.

5. Prices of packed food within the railway station
According to the Indian Railways rules, the IRCTC authorized food vendors who sell packed food items or water bottles are not allowed to sell their goods over the MRP. If the vendor is caught selling above the MRP, he will be punished with a heavy fine and his license will also be canceled.
6. TTE cannot disturb passengers after 10 pm
As per Indian Railways rules, TTE cannot disturb passengers after 10 pm. They are allowed to check tickets only from 6 AM to 10 PM.
7. Refund for short terminated trains
If you are not able to complete your train journey due to issues like landslides, floods, earthquakes or any technical problems, the railways have to make alternate arrangements to get you to the destination. If the railways are not able to make alternate arrangements, they have to refund the entire amount paid by you for booking the ticket.
