How fraudsters are using Google Calendar to steal your personal info?

Fraudsters are getting smarter each day. They have come up with new tricks to cheat people and make a quick buck. They are using tricks like card skimming, identity theft, vishing, fake websites and so on, to steal personal information of people and make money.

They have now started using Google calendar and similar apps to wipe out the bank accounts of innocent people. This is a new kind of phishing scam used by fraudsters to dupe victims. In this blog, we will discuss everything you need to know on this fraud.

How fraudsters are using Google Calendar to steal your personal info?

You must be aware of the Google calendar. It is a preinstalled app in Android smartphones and is being used by millions of people across the World. According to the threat intelligence firm Kaspersky, fraudsters are using Google calendar to phish for personal Information. 

Google calendars consist of various features and one among them is the default setting, which automatically adds invitation to user’s schedule, even if they do not want to respond to them. The invitation is in the calendar and a pop-up notification is sent a few days prior to the start of the event. Now, the fraudsters are misusing this feature or settings to steal your personal information.

Fraudsters send fake invitations to a contest and add it on users Google Calendar schedule. This message comes as a pop-up notification in the users' phone, asking them to sign up to avail prize money.

As users receive a notification from Google Calendar, they believe it to be genuine and click on the link provided in the invitation to avail the prize money. 

As soon as users click on the link, they are redirected to a webpage where they are provided a questionnaire along with prize money. To receive the prize money, the users will be asked to provide personal details including their card number. 

Once fraudsters get this information, they will use it to gain access to your bank account and steal money. They can also use this information to commit fraud in your name.

How to avoid this fraud?

You can avoid this fraud by turning off the automatic adding of invites to your Google Calendar app. This is how to do it:

- To turn off the automatic adding of invites to your Google Calendar app you must open Google Calendar and click the settings Gear Icon.

- Click on Event Settings and change the setting for "Automatically add invitations" to "No, only show invitations to which I've responded".

-Make sure to uncheck "Show declined events"
