Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the government, has become an important document for all citizens. Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued to each citizen of India. It is issued by taking a person's biometric details like iris, fingerprints, demographic information like date of birth and address. Aadhaar card can be used as proof of identity and address in any part of the country.

Minimum age for Aadhaar card:

There is no minimum age for applying for an Aadhar card in India. Aadhar card is issued irrespective of an individual’s age. Even newborns are eligible to apply for an Aadhar card.

Aadhar Card for Children below 5 years of Age

The Aadhar card issued to kids below 5 years of age is also known as "Baal Aadhaar" and it’s blue in colour.  No biometrics are taken for issuing "Baal Aadhaar" and only a photograph of a child is necessary.

It’s compulsory for parents to carry their own Aadhar card and child's birth certificate, to apply for an Aadhar card for children below 5 years. If parents don't have their Aadhaar card, they should apply for it.

To apply for an Aadhar card for children above 5 years, parents need to enclose their Aadhar card along with the child's birth certificate, school identity card, and Aadhaar Enrolment Form. In this case, biometric details of the child will be taken (all 10 fingerprints, iris scan and photograph). These details will be updated again, when the child turns 15 years of age.

How to Apply for Aadhaar for Children below 5 years?

1. To apply for an Aadhaar card for your child, you must visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. You can identify the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre on the UIDAI website.

2. You have to fill the Aadhaar Enrolment Form, by mentioning your Aadhaar number. It is mandatory for parents to provide their Aadhar details to apply for child's Aadhaar card. The child's birth certificate must be submitted.

3. As the child is below 5 years, no biometric details will be taken other than the child’s photograph.

4. After applying for an Aadhaar card, you will be given an acknowledgment slip which contains the enrolment number.

5. The child's Aadhaar card will be issued within 90 days.

1. You should visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

2. Fill the Aadhaar Enrolment Form by mentioning your Aadhar details. After filling all the details you must submit the form along with the relevant documents.

3. As your child is above 5 years, his biometric details will be taken along with the photograph.

4. After applying for an Aadhar card, you will be given an acknowledgment slip by the executive.

5. The Aadhaar card is sent to your address within 90 days.
