Each day cybercriminals come up with new tricks to cheat people and make quick money. According to a report, India ranks fourth out of 10 most targeted countries by cyber attackers. Every month nearly 12,456 cybercrime cases are registered in India. Unfortunately, not everyone knows what has to be done if they fall victim to cybercrime. Cybercrime is a criminal activity which is done using a computer device or a network. The main intention of carrying out a cybercrime is to generate profit for cybercriminals or to damage computers or devices or to spread malware and illegal information.

How to file a cybercrime complaint in India?

Many people are losing hard earned money to cybercriminals each day. As per statistics, at least one cyber attack is reported every 10 minutes in India. So, it is very important to be aware on the steps involved in filing a cybercrime complaint in India.

These are a few simple steps to file cybercrime complaint in India:

1. If you are a victim of cybercrime, the first thing you must do is file a cybercrime complaint with the cyber crime cell of the city where you live in. Cybercrime complaint can be registered with any of the cyber cells in India, irrespective of the place where you live. This is mainly because cybercrime comes under the purview of global jurisdiction.

2.  While filling the cybercrime complaint, you must provide name, email id and phone number along with the application letter. Your written complaint must be addressed to the Head of the Cyber Crime Cell.

3. You will be asked to provide certain documents while filing the complaint. This is the list of documents that must be submitted in case of various cybercrimes.

For complaints related to social media

  • A screenshot of the alleged profile or content
  • A screenshot of the URL of the alleged content
  • Both hard and soft copies of the alleged content

For complaints related to email

  • You must submit the copy of the suspected email.
  • The entire header of the suspected email.
  • Both hard and soft copies of the suspected email and its header.

For complaints related to Internet Banking/Online Transactions/Lottery Scam/Fake Call

  • Bank statement for the last 6 months.
  • Copy of the SMS received regarding the suspected transactions.
  • Copy of the victim’s ID and address proof as provided to the bank.
