1. Set up WhatsApp lock

You have to set up a password or PIN to lock your WhatsApp. It is the first step towards keeping your data safe on WhatsApp. In case your phone is lost, it prevents others from accessing the app.

2. Control the privacy settings

WhatsApp has certain privacy settings to protect your privacy. You have the option to set your profile photo last seen, about to be seen by everyone, contacts only, or no one. You can even hide your status from certain people.

3. You can block unwanted users

If you don't want to receive messages, calls and status updates from any WhatsApp user, you have the option to block them. The blocked contacts won't be able to see your last seen, online, status updates and any changes made to your profile photo.  If you receive a spam message from an unknown number, you have the option to report and block the number.

4. Leave a Group

WhatsApp provides an option to exit the group from which you are a member. In case you have been added to some unknown group, you can simply leave the group by clicking on the option "exit group".

5. Enable Two-Step Verification

WhatsApp has an optional feature called Two-Step Verification which is set up to add more security to your account. If you enable two-step verification, your attempt to verify the phone number on WhatsApp has to be accompanied by the six-digit PIN created by you using this feature.

6.  Beware of scams on WhatsApp

As WhatsApp is an instant messaging app, there are chances of you receiving scam messages periodically; so you must be careful on these scams. 

An example of this is many people had received a message regarding WhatsApp Gold or account expiry. It was claimed that the message was sent from WhatsApp. This was a trick played by fraudsters to make quick money.  But, the fact is WhatsApp will never contact users through the app.  Anyone offering a free subscription, claiming to be from WhatsApp is a scam just to cheat people.

How to secure WhatsApp when your phone is lost?

In case you lose your phone, the first thing you must do is call your service provider and get the SIM locked. Use the new SIM card with the same number to activate WhatsApp on a different phone. Whatsapp can be activated with one number on one phone.
