How to Unblock ATM Card?

These days many people use ATM cards and it has become an important part of life. We hardly step out of home without an ATM card. Using these cards, you can withdraw money from ATM's and it has eliminated the need of standing in a long queue at banks to withdraw cash. ATM cards are used in many places like restaurants, pubs, shopping malls, medical shops and hospitals for payments. You can even make online payments using these cards.

While ATM cards are used for many things, imagine what would happen if your card gets blocked. It is very irritating right? ATM cards are blocked for various reasons. As ATM cards are vulnerable to frauds, the banks have come up with various measures for the safety of cardholder's money. In this blog, we will discuss why ATM cards are blocked and how to unblock them.

How to Unblock ATM Card?

1. Automatic Unlock

Your card will be blocked for 24 hours, if you enter the wrong ATM PIN three times. In this case you don't have to contact the issuer of the card for getting it unblocked, as it’s automatically unlocked after 24 hours.

2. Application to the card issuer

If your ATM card is blocked due to negligence or carelessness, you can visit the nearest bank branch and submit the application for unblocking of the card. It is important to submit your identity proof along with the application. After the application is submitted, banks will take 48 hours to five working days to unblock your card.

3. New card

In case your ATM card is blocked because of security reasons, you have no other option other than getting a new card from the bank. Security reasons may be fraud with your ATM card. Also, when your card is lost or misplaced, you will have to contact the bank and get it blocked. You can block your card by calling customer care, sending SMS or through filing complaints on the app or website. After your card is blocked, the bank will issue a new card within 5 to 7 working days.

4. When your card has expired

Your ATM cards issued by banks come with a validity period of 3 to 5 years. Once the validity period is over, your card will expire and it is automatically blocked by the bank. After it is blocked, you will not be able to carry out any transaction with your card. In such cases, you need to contact your bank and apply for a new card. The card will be delivered within five to seven working days after applying for the new card.
