Many Aadhaar Card holders are still worried that their Aadhaar card can be misused by fraudsters to open a bank account or to carry out any unauthorized transaction. But, UIDAI has made it clear that nobody can open a bank account just by submitting a photocopy or physical Aadhaar card. Whenever a person wants to open a bank account by submitting Aadhaar card, banks are required to perform security checks by carrying out verification through either biometric data or OTP authentication. Which means, no fraudsters can use your Aadhaar card to open a bank account without going through the verification process.
In case someone opens a bank account using Aadhaar card details without biometric or OTP authentication, the bank will be held liable for the loss suffered by the customer.
Since many Aadhaar card holders are still worried about its security, UIDAI has come up with something called masked Aadhaar card to secure the details.

Masked Aadhaar is similar to a regular Aadhaar card but it shows only the last 4 digits of the 12-digit Aadhaar number and remaining 8 digits will be hidden. Other details such as the name, date of birth, gender, address and the QR code will remain the same.
This card can be used when you are uncomfortable sharing your Aadhaar number or when you are using your Aadhaar card as an identity proof. So, instead of carrying a physical copy of your Aadhaar Card or a photocopy you can carry a masked Aadhaar Card. Masked Aadhaar card is less likely to be misused when it is being stolen or misplaced.
Masked Aadhaar can be downloaded online by visiting the official website of UIDAI. In order to download masked Aadhaar, your mobile number should be registered in UIDAI’s database.
1. To download masked Aadhaar you need to visit the official website of UIDAI and click on “Download Aadhaar”.
2. In the next step, you need to select eitherAadhaar or VID or Enrolment ID in the “I Have” section and enter the details.
3. After entering the required details, you need to click on 'I want a masked Aadhaar ' option.
4. Later, you need to enter the captcha and request for OTP.
5. OTP will be sent to your mobile number registered with UIDAI.
6. Enter the OTP and click on “Download Aadhaar” after taking the quick Survey.
Just like regular Aadhaar card even masked Aadhaar serves as a valid proof of identity. You can use it while booking a hotel, travelling on flights and so on. But you cannot use this Aadhaar card for availing government benefits like subsidies and other welfare schemes. To avail government benefits you must submit regular Aadhaar card.
