Not happy with the Insurer? Here is How to File a Complaint

Insurance protects your life, health and property from risk. There are many insurers who sell various kinds of insurance like Term Insurance, Health Insurance, Motor Insurance and so on. Not all customers who avail insurance are happy with their insurers. There would be issues like delay in claim settlement, misrepresentation of policy terms and conditions, disputes regarding premium and so on.

If you are not happy with your insurance company, you must file a complaint with the complaint Grievance Redressal Officer of the branch and get an acknowledgment. You can get the contact details on the policy document, the website of the insurer or the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA). 

As per rules, the insurance company has to reply to your complaint within 15 days of receiving the complaint. In case the company fails to reply within the stipulated time, or if the customer is not happy with the solution offered by the insurance company, he/she can register the complaint with Grievance Redressal Cell of the Consumer Affairs Department of IRDA.

How to Register a Complaint?

1. Online process for filing a complaint

You can file the complaint online either by sending an email to complaints@irda.gov.in or by making a call on a toll-free number 155255 (or) 1800-4254-732.

2. Offline process for filing a complaint

You can also file a complaint against the insurer, offline. To file the complaint offline, you must download the complaint registration form available on IRDA website. Once the form is downloaded, you must fill the form and send it to General Manager, Consumer Affairs Department, Grievance Redressal Cell, IRDA. You have to send the supporting documents as well.

You can also file a complaint on a plain and duly signed paper. The complaint must include name, address, Name of the branch of the insurance company and reason for registering the complaint. You must also include the nature and extent of the loss suffered along with relief sought from the Insurance Ombudsman. As mentioned you must attach the supporting documents.

3. IRDAI portal

Apart from the above mentioned process, there is another method to file a complaint against the insurance company. You can either make a fresh complaint or escalate it to the Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS), by visiting the website (igms.irda.gov.in) using the online complaint redressal portal of IRDA. Under the IGMS system, you can even amend the complaint, midway.

Note: Before approaching the IRDA, it is mandatory to file a complaint with the relevant insurance company.
